Well I was until it became Big Brother. I think it was Thursday when I noticed an annoying change to my feeds. There were feeds that were hours and hours old and I promise for a minute I thought my account was suspended. So I played around with it for a while and found that they seperated the feeds into two categories: live feeds and news feeds. What I do not like about the new format is what I call the Big Brother effect, your live feeds track and update everything you do except emails and instant messages. Clearly this makes stalking easy. At anyrate, this change started my Facebook detox. Yes, I still use it, but mostly for email and instant messaging. I have conformed to the Twitter lifestyle and it only a matter of time before more of my friends make the move to Twitter. Today I find myself continuing evolve as a business person. What I have found is that the system you have in place for business really determines your success and growth of your business. In the last 2 month, I have seen my cities downtown shift from potentially striving and rebuilding to being in the center of conspiracy and lack. What I've learned from this great demise is that your business is only as strong as your leader and if you have weakness, they will eventually surface beyond the window dressing.

When a coach is not equipped with the star player, they really have to play to their strengths. On top of this, they research every team diligently before game day and are willing to make adjustments at the drop of a dime. Coaches are encouragers and motivate the team through speech and and action. They are extremely passionate about the win. When the game is over they regroup, celebrate the victories and prepare for the next challenge.

The X- Factor

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; There are always two outcomes but the variables are what not only determine the outcome but influences the journey.

Prime example, I decided to work on my daughter sleeping through the night this week. She's sticks to her schedule and usually fall to sleep around 8:00 p.m. However, she wakes up by habit around 3:00 a.m. snack for a minute and then is back to sleep within 15 minutes.

Well the possible outcomes for this decision is either she sleeps through the night or does not. So Sunday night I put her to bed at 8:30 p.m. and like clockwork she started crying around 3:30 a.m. She cried off and on for an hour so I gave in, got up and fed her. After her snack she went right back to sleep. Monday, the same thing happened, but after 30 minutes the crying stopped "We're making progress", I thought. Tuesday, 15 minutes and crying stops, I'm really feeling good and am convinced that by Friday she will be sleeping through the night.

Unexpectantly, a variable changes and all that progress is thrown out the window. The variable in this case is teething. I cannot imagine what it is like but she has been pulling at her gums and extremely fussy since Wenesday. Let's not even bring up how it has affected her sleep, affected my sleep, affected my husbands sleep. But I can tell you that I was spoiled by 6 months of a predictable sleep pattern. So my husband and I will continue to try to get her to sleep through the night while keeping her comfortable through this growth process.

However, I have been thinking, what if I decided to change her pattern a week earlier or a week later ? What would the outcome have been? Would there have been another variable to prolong the process? We make decisions every minute of our lives but I find it facinating to examine the variables that impact the outcomes.

Don't Stop Till You Get Enough!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I finished watching The Game on BET, next up 106 and Park. Within the first few seconds I knew something was wrong because the livest audience was silent and the host Terrance and Rocsi had a look of devistation. They made the announcement and I immediately turned to CNN and MSNBC. After that I hit Facebook and Twitter on my laptop and boy was there a buzz {I heard this morining that Facebook's traffic was double it's normal capacity and Twitter was triple}.

As the night progressed and the devistating news hit the airwaves I flipped from BET to MTV for the musical tributes because I could'nt stomach mainstream media's continued allegations and speculation. I was enraged by this entertainment show (name not worth mentioning) because they had a grim picture posted and horrible commercial, for lack of better non-explicit phrase...they suck! At any rate as much as I desired to be in New York at the Apollo Theater, I know I was in the right place; at home with my 7 month old daughter passing on the importace of this moment through music and osmosis...and I think she got it (she watched the entire "Beat It" video and that's a rarity, if it's not Baby Einstein it does'nt keep her attention). I know you are thinking I must be crazy to try to make a career change in the midst of this economic turmoil but it is time for a change. I have been on all the major sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, VisualCV and Facebook networking and meeting great individuals but falling short of the goal. I have reached out to indiviuals in positions in which I know I can learn from to volunteer and lend my expertise in exchange for marketable experience and I continue to do that to this day. So while I continue my search I look to barter my skillls in exchange for marketable experience in the arena of community development.

Current Skills include but are not limited to: Coalition Building, Proposal Writing, Youth Development, Market (Demographic) Research and Data Analysis

Experience to Acquire: Managing Federal Funds, Assessing Housing Market and Real Estate Trends, Program Development and Implementation

To find out more about this opportunity or to dialogue about this idea please leave a comment. It is the skills and knowledge gained by a worker through education and experience."

So, if we continue to look at it, education and experience of its inhabitants make communities thrive. This concept is very interesting to me because education leads to experience. However, if education is not pursued or viewed as a valuable resource, it will be squandered. There are millions of dollars going into infastructure and physical development of communities (and don't get me wrong updated infastructure is relevant), but what do we do when majority of the students graduating from inner city schools are not equipped with the basic lifeskills that are vital to them thriving socially (interviewing skills, budgeting, critical thinking skills)? And let's not talk about the number of students just waiting for their 16th birthday to drop out...yes that is the aspiration of a fraction of students.

Now do not get me wrong, I am not blaming the education system because teachers are paid to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and inspire, not to raise children. However, there has to an overarching sound that echo's into communities:
1) Education Starts at Home: President Obama said it best, turn off the television and engage young minds through creative projects, reading, and though provoking dialouge.
2) Education Must Be a Community Iniative not a Soundbite: Community activist and leaders should spend as much talking to parents about their childrens education as they spend talking to educators about the drop out and graduation rates. There has to be action beyond the words ensuring that students are enriched beyond the classroom.
3) Education is a Life Long Partnership Between Schools, Communities and Families that Never Ends.

So we've talked about education lets touch on marketable experience. As for all resources, jobs are scarce. Generally the demand for jobs always exceeds the supply, but in this recession the scarcity of jobs makes it hard for teenagers to start out in the jobs at movie theaters and fastfood restaurants. So where does the experience start: non paid internships and apprenticeships. Yes I'm aware that there are already programs in place for high acheiving students and students on the vocational track, but what about the students that fall in between. Community leaders should develop a cooperative with community businesses exchanging experience and mentoring for free manpower. Marketing an initiative of this magnitude shows community stakeholders that there is an ongoing commitment to economic growth.

The Innovation Code

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Taking what worked in the past and evolving it to something that is effective and efficient. Even in our personal lives, we are constantly challenged to reinvent ourselves to be relevant in the new economy. This is what I speak of when I talk about the Innovation Code, becoming relevant and providing a voice that speaks to the current need.

Two crucial tools needed to grow in relevance and reach pesonal innovation are the understanding the fundementals of the current economy and becoming Web 2.0 saavy. One of my tweeps, Sean Isaacs posted a note on Facebook essentially talking about the inner conflict that plagues the human experience. Do you allow yorself to be lead by passion or by reason?
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; The design team was challenged with providing the client with an eco-friendly design. They built a nice modern sofa and stuffed the cushions with recycled denim and explained that recycled denim is also used in mattresses, car seats and pillows. This got my wheels turning and peeked my intrest in recycling this resource.

So I started a search on Google "recycled denim". Number 1 on the list was http://www.allfreecrafts.com/sewing/recycle-denim.shtml which list different ways to reuse denim for instance creating a denim organizer, placemates and potholders. They have awesome suggestions, but not nesseceraly what I was looking for. So three pages later I find the link for JBM Fibers Inc.

JBM Fibers, Inc. is a manufacturer that converts raw material into products used in numerous applications such as automotive insulation, matresses and insulator pads. As I explored the site I began to wonder where does this company receive it's supply? Could you imagine starting a used denim drive and contributing to the earth in this manner. Not only would you be reducing waist, but you would also contribute to minimizing the use of pesticides used to grow cotton.

Just a Green thought for this Red Economy!

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Jonnette S. I believe it would take the message of Christ to another level to have a lifestyle station that played the likes of Sho Baraka with Jeremy Camp, Toby Mac and Third Day! Why haven't we met in the middle? We have Contemporary Christian Stations and Traditional Gospel Stations but nothing in between. It's time to evolve and blend the sound because I don't know many people that exclusively listen to one genre of music. As people become more tolarant and seek for understanding and unity, we become more open to diverse sounds. It's taken on in mainstream radio; a progam may play Kanye West, followed by Chris Daughtry, then Mary J. Blige, then Brittney Spears. Hopefully, radio executives will give it a shot, but until then I'll continue to blog about it.

The Good Music Advocate

Social Innovator of the Year

...And the Award Goes To

On this page when I speak of Social Innovation, I'm not just talking about Social Media. While that is a vital part, it also entails doing something extraordinary to positively impact a community through deeds. With that said...

I met this Pastor on Facebook who was undertaking a great feat. He was launching a church in the middle of a Metropolis. It is one of the fastest growing cities South of the Mason Dixon line. So I followed what he was doing, read his frequent emails and updates; his churches development was really gaining momentum. With over 2,000 friends and counting on Facebook and who knows how many other followers in other networks, his practical message about life reaches across oceans and mountains at the push of a button. At this time in history, when many people are facing job loss at extreme rates, the message of hope needs to be given in unconventional ways tho reach lives that it may have missed. While implementing the blueprint for the church, he also challenged his following to contribute to a uniform and toy drive which blessed lives of inner city elementary school students. It is easy to see that he truly believes that nothing is impossible with God. And through his use of social media that message has gone viral. If you are in the Atlanta Area this Sunday, you should check out the grand opening. If you don't already know, the Social Innovator of the Year is none other than the "Facebook Pastor", Shaun King!

To RSVP for the grand opening of The Courageous Church service log on to http://www.churchsuckschallenge.com/rsvp.html.

note: This is not an official award, but it is an individual recognition made by Jonnette S. When I woke up I needed some music to wake me up. I looked all over my house for the Clark Sisters "Encore" CD because I really wanted to hear them, but had no success with finding it. So I went to Youtube, because I remember viewing a lot of their videos this week. The first song I looked for is my favorite song by the group and my favorite song of all times. Why, you ask? Well I have two reasons: 1) The composition of the song the melody, the harmony, the way Karen leads it, The way Twinkie wrote it.... 2) The message of the song, Twinkie (the organist and the composer of more than 75% of the Clark Sisters catalog) has a way of taking scriptures and arranging them in a catchy way that keeps the lyrics in your mind and heart. So without further ado... My favorite song. I recommended Ping.fm which was recommended to me by Vincent Hunt. Pinging is a way to broadcast micro blogs. It is used to direct traffic to your sight and communicate simultaneously on multiple platforms. It has tremendously streamlined my marketing efforts and instead of going from network to network copying and pasting information, I can write one message and broadcast it among my various profiles.

So tell me about some Pinging sites?
Ping.fm (http://ping.fm) is the site that I am truly familiar with. It is extremely user friendly which is great for beginners.

I am still investigating the following:
1) Ping Goat (http://pingoat.com/)
2) Ping feedburner (http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/ping)
3) Google Blog Search Ping Service (http://blogsearch.google.com/ping)

Why? Well, not only do they broadcast to social networks, but they also broadcast to Google, Yahoo and other search engines. In this game, it's all about exposure. So Ping It!

Twitterville Branding

Your brand is everything. So why not brand all of your online platforms? The next platform that I will be branding is my Twitter page. Why? As always, why not? But seriously, Twitter users are very devout and once you start a conversation that your followers want to be a part of they will value your voice in the platform. So when they come to your page why not leave them with more information about yourself...in essence, leave breadcrubs for them to follow. Humans are curious by nature and want to learn more about a person or busness when interested so why not feed into that curiosity.

How?
Why not advertise your blog on Twitter. Design a layout for the background of your twitter page. Make sure to include the blog website, pictures a tagline and any other vital notes that round out your brand. Because in business your brand is all you have.

Post
From observation your post are extremely helpful because the round out your thoughts and highlight your interests. But don't over promote yourself, start valuable conversations, get to know a few people and assist them when they have an inquiry. Do you want to know how? Let's see, I started with joining various social media networks (example: Myspace, Facebook & LivePerson) . Secondly, I stayed somewhat active in my networks and some of the ones that I don't use anymore, I will never delete them because they are apart of my presence. Thirdly, whenever I blog, I tag two versions of my name: Jonnette Fair and Jonnette S. Let's see:

1) We make more calculated risks that focus on the conservation of our resources.
Face it in this economy we are looking at our wallets more now than ever. When I had an online radio broadcast (a year ago), the primary reason I decided to discontinue the service is because I was paying for a good service, but did not receive the return on my end. Now that I think about it, it would have been more productive for me to start a social network (on a free platform such as Ning) and promote my show and play music that way until I established the following that would have been beneficial for the broadcast. If I was still interested in continuing the broadcast, this would be the strategy that I would implement... if I had more exposure to Web 2.0 when I launched the broadcast, I'm sure this cost efficient strategy would have paid off in the long run. No money out of the pocket until there were subscriptions in the "bank".

2) We are more strategic with our partnerships and alliances, focused on productivity and efficiency.
I was watching a web broadcast on You-Tube (unfortunately I don't remember who posted it) which was on transitioning your business to survive economic hardships. The first thing that was stated was "trim the fat". Look at your current contacts and partners and stay in contact with the ones that are always productive. "Don't focus a lot of your time trying to create business with contacts who have not performed for you in the past", because time is also a resource that needs to be used adequately.

3) We conduct more research which provides essential data needed to streamline our services.
I Google and search Wikipedia for everything. When I need more detailed information and feedback I start discussions in various groups in various networks and I'm not the only one. I constantly meet entrepreneurs who are constantly looking for information which will streamline their cost and innovate their products and services.

4) Potential clients are more focused on increasing their utility for a nominal fee, so services that they entrusted with more established company's may be outsourced to a startup if the startup can prove that they can provide the service effectively and efficiently.
Enough said.

5) Web, Internet, Social Networking, Blogging, Micro-Blogging...Need I Say More!
We're in the realm of free publishing and face it the web is the new face of public relations. So if you establish a presence on multiple platforms you are extremely likely to connect with individuals and businesses who can use your services or products. So if your out there keep grinding. If you're not, what are you waiting for create your client base online!

So if you are considering starting a business and wondering if now is the time, I say yes! If not now then when. You have all you need, get rid of doubt and move forward!

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Finding Purpose Man vs. Machine Jonnette S.
